BrightFarms has released plans to partner with Salmar Properties in building the world's largest rooftop greenhouse. It will be a 100,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse that will top the Liberty View Industrial Plaza Tower in Brooklyn, New York. BrightFarm's state-of-the-art design is expected to produce over 1 million pounds of produce annually and create a new model for urban agriculture. The partnership between BrightFarms and Salmar Properties is part of Bloomberg administration's plan to revitalize Brooklyn's industrial waterfront.
BrightFarms is a business that finances, designs, constructs, and operates hydroponic farms in stores and supermarkets. By cutting the length produce must travel from the farm to your dinner plate, they are effectively reducing the carbon emissions released into our environment from the trucks and trains used to carry produce cross country, while also reducing the cost of the produce. The rooftop hydroponic farm in Brooklyn is Brightfarms most ambitious build to date.
“The partnership between BrightFarms and Salmar Properties to build the world’s largest rooftop farm is an exciting new model for sustainable, urban agriculture. The farm will contribute meaningfully to the mission of FoodWorks, my vision to improve NYC’s food system by dramatically increasing local food production while positively affecting public health, the economy, and the environment.” says New York City Council Speaker, Christine C. Quinn.
The multi-acre farm will be able to provide 5,000 New Yorkers with they're entire vegetable consumption needs, while providing a full-time job for 25 others. Construction is slated for the third quarter of 2012 and the grand opening is expected in early 2013.
